Unlocking the Film Look with the iPhone 16 Pro
Oct 01, 2024iPhone 16 Pro - Unlock the Film Look (Video version)
In today’s post, I'm excited to share how I managed to unlock that coveted film look using the iPhone 16 Pro. To aid my quest, I rented the Fuji XT5, which provided a helpful reference point. The great news is that you can apply these techniques with the iPhone 16 Pro, Pro Max, and even the iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max.
If you don't have any of these models, don’t worry! I’ve uploaded some Raw Files you can download and experiment with as you follow along. Let's dive in!
Why Go for the Film Look?
Typically, I aim for a filmic aesthetic in my client work and YouTube videos using log profiles from larger sensor cameras like the a7S III or a7 III. However, I wanted to achieve that same vibe with the device I carry everywhere: my iPhone. While iPhone footage straight out of the camera can feel overly sharp and digital, a few tweaks can transform it into something more organic and film-like.
Getting Started: Settings
Part 1: Native Settings
1. Camera Formats
First, navigate to Settings > Camera > Formats and switch from High Efficiency to Most Compatible. While High Efficiency saves space, it may complicate editing. Most Compatible is your friend when working across various devices and editing software.
2. Enable Apple ProRes Log
Next, toggle on Apple Log in Settings > Camera. Apple Log gives you that flat, washed-out look ideal for preserving color and light data. This is key for achieving a filmic aesthetic during color grading.
3. Record Video Settings
Set your video to 4K at 24 FPS. This frame rate introduces a natural motion blur that mimics how our eyes perceive movement and evokes that classic cinematic feel.
4. Lock White Balance
Locking your white balance helps maintain color consistency throughout your video, ensuring that lighting shifts won’t confuse the colors in post-production.
5. Other Important Settings
- Turn off HDR video for a cleaner image.
- Lock camera if you plan to shoot with a specific lens to avoid jarring jumps between camera modes.
- Make sure preserve settings is toggled on to maintain your camera mode and ProRes settings when you close the app.
Part 2: Shooting Techniques
When shooting, consider your subject and the film look you want to achieve. Choose one of my custom LUTs for a specific aesthetic, or manually adjust settings to match the style you’re going for.
Avoiding Ghost Flares: If shooting in low light, reposition your camera slightly to minimize unwanted light reflections, and keep your lenses clean.
Composition Matters: Use the grid feature to help with framing and ensure your horizon is level. Always aim for stable shots—let your subject move instead of the camera.
Sound: Capturing good audio is essential. Use the iPhone's built-in mic to record high-quality sound effects or ambiance to elevate your footage.
Part 3: Lighting and Exposure
The best times to shoot are during golden or blue hours. Underexpose your shots by about -0.7 to keep your highlights intact. Use your finger to lock the highlight exposure for added control.
Part 4: Color Grading
With Apple Log footage, you're starting with a flat image. In Final Cut Pro X, ensure your library is set to an SDR timeline for proper export. Avoid using color space overrides as they can disrupt your LUT application.
Applying LUTs: Drag and drop my custom LUT effect onto your clips. You can adjust further with color wheels to match the footage. For those without LUTs, consider using comparison tools in software like DaVinci Resolve to fine-tune your colors.
Advanced Tools
Final Cut Camera App
For more control over exposure, try the Final Cut Camera app. It allows manual adjustments similar to high-end cameras and can sync multiple iPhones for seamless editing.
Black Magic Camera App
This app enables recording in H.265 with Apple Log, providing smaller file sizes without sacrificing quality. You can also preview LUTs directly in the app, giving you flexibility while shooting.
Conclusion
While mirrorless cameras may offer superior image quality, the convenience and portability of the iPhone make it an incredible tool for spontaneous shooting. Achieving a film look with the iPhone 16 Pro is entirely feasible with the right techniques and tools.
Remember, shooting style, lighting, and exposure are critical in elevating your visuals. Use the provided LUTs or explore manual grading for a personalized touch. Embrace the iPhone’s capabilities, experiment, and unlock your filmmaking potential!
